| EU raises legal heat on Italy over Naples waste Posted: 31 Jan 2008 03:00 PM CST The European commission is to send Italy a final written warning of possible court proceedings over the waste crisis in Naples and Campania, it announced on Thursday. Meetings with Italian officials earlier this week have failed to persuade the commission that Rome is in control of the situation. Measures adopted by the government earlier this month "fail to provide a longer term solution to ensure waste management in Campania in a manner consistent with EU legislation," the commission said. It had sent Italy a first legal warning in June last year. In a separate case the commission announced that it is launching court action against Italy over alleged transgressions of EU law in the procurement of waste management services in the city of Contigliano. *Also on Thursday, the European court of justice condemned Italy for failing to transpose an unrelated EU directive setting out rules for public participation in environmental decision-making.
