Italy faces fine threat over illegal landfills Posted: 08 Feb 2008 06:47 PM CST The European commission has sent Italy a first written warning under article 228 of the EU treaty for failing to act on a European court of justice (ECJ) ruling last spring that it had failed to uphold EU law in connection with illegal landfills. Italy could face lump-sum and daily fines if condemned by the ECJ for a second time. A European commission spokeswoman said the country had not provided a list of illegal landfill sites required by the judgment.
