EU waste prevention targets "achievable"

EU waste prevention targets "achievable" The EU should set itself the target of reducing waste generation by 15 per cent compared with current levels to 2020, an association of local authorities engaged in sustainable resource management (ACR+) said in a statement on Thursday. Last week the European parliament's environment committee adopted its second-reading position on a proposed overhaul of the EU's waste management rules, calling for waste generation to be stabilized at 2009 levels by 2012. But the association said that for many regions and cities this objective "should be more ambitious". ACR+ also described MEPs' demand for half of all household and similar waste to be recycled by 2020 - a target likely to be rejected by governments - as "truly achievable". But in a statement also published on Thursday, EU waste management association Fead said this recycling target was "quite ambitious". Fead said it was particularly concerned by a separate target to recycle 70 per cent of industrial, construction and manufacturing waste by 2020. There is an urgent need for an impact assessment of the proposed targets and for harmonised EU definitions of these waste streams, Fead said.
