Ireland: £20m recycling facility opens Posted: 21 May 2008 12:04 PM CDT Waste management company Greenstar has opened a new Euro 20m recycling facility in Bray, County Wicklow. The site will divert 135,000 tonnes from landfill every year and features an automated dry mix recyclables line to automatically separate aluminium and steel cans, paper, cardboard and plastics. Greenstar says the facility will be able to process 25,000 tonnes of commercial and household waste a year. A commercial and industrial fully automated waste line is also included on-site and can process ten different types of material, which the company claims will increase recycling rates from 42% to 70%. Waste will be accepted from the Greater Dublin area and will aid the government's objectives on recycling. Steve Cowman, chief executive of Greenstar, said that the company's continuing investment is helping address the country's "critical lack of waste infrastructure". "However, if Ireland is serious about meeting its EU waste targets before the looming 2010 deadline, then the government needs to create the right regulatory environment to encourage investment in alternative, viable technologies," he said.
